OLD-SCHOOL CRAFT, NEW SCHOOL THINKING

ABOUT GARMENTA APPAREL

Once upon a time, the New York City Garment District was a hotbed for innovation in fashion. And at the center of that reputation for excellence was the “garmento” — the garment factory owners and workers who built the U.S. ready-to-wear fashion industry with their own hands. They knew the clothing production process better than anyone else because they did it all, from the first sketch to the final stitch, in-house. And while their coveted skill level is legendary, finding a modern-day garmento can feel hard to come by.

I learned my trade from the last of the garmentos more than 20 years ago, at the onset of my career. That’s why I call my business Garmenta Apparel — because I’m carrying on the garmentos’ work, but in a modern world and with an inclusive, values-based twist.

“Betsy makes you feel like she's on your team, even though she's totally remote. She is a very good communicator.”

— Naomi, NAOMI NOMI

Hello, I’m Betsy

I’m the patternmaker, grader and all around technical guru. When you get in touch, I’ll be the one you are chatting with. No chatbots here or someone to *hopefully* forward your email to the correct department . Nope. Just me.

I have 20 years experience working in the garment industry from small start ups all the way to large retailers. I’ve seen a lot and done a lot.…oh boy, have I seen a lot!

I have been responsible for million dollar investments which require, knowledge, timing, professionalism and a decisive outlook. Basically, both you and I are serious about getting you results.

I work remotely with all of my clients using professional grade software (Optitex & Gerber Accumark (coming soon!), multiple plotters, a digitizing table and a whole team of Alvanon Dressforms representing a range of sizes.

THE GARMENTA WAY

INCLUSIVE —

The world is a better place when every body is celebrated. I’ve spent years nerding out over grading and fit so that you can truly call yourself a size-inclusive brand.

PRECISE AND PROFESSIONAL —

Stop worrying about what you don’t know or if something was done “correctly”. I stress the details and ask they questions you don’t even know to- yet. I’ll make you look good for your production partners and customers.

COLLABORATIVE —

I hope you’re looking for a partner in your apparel brand, because even though I’m an independent contractor, I get really invested in my clients and their success.

TIMELY AND RELIABLE —

Fashion moves quickly, so I think fast and I work even faster. Time is money, and I would never dream of wasting yours.

“Thinking about hiring Betsy? Do it! Betsy is fantastic, her communication is excellent and her work speaks volumes. She’s skilled with pattern making, which is a rare find.”

— Joanna, Pyne & Smith Clothiers

I’ve been in the garment industry since 2002, working for massive retailers, small startups, creative geniuses, and the downright crazy. There isn’t much I haven’t seen and experienced in this business, so when it comes to your apparel line or sewing patterns, I can handle any challenge you present.
